Ahoy, Matey
The nights grow longer, the seas grow darker, and the spirits of piracy's past are getting restless!
This week, our Haunted Seas voyage takes us to the windswept shores of Cape Cod, where a heartbroken young woman named Maria Hallett may have unleashed a terrible curse upon the pirate she loved—Black Sam Bellamy.
But the living pirates aren't having a much easier time! Blackbeard is busy relieving merchant vessels of their cargo, while the Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet attempts a daring escape from captivity. Spoiler alert: being a gentleman doesn't necessarily make one a master fugitive.
We've also got a book that digs into the legend of Bellamy's bride and a pirate jamboree on Ocracoke Island, where Blackbeard met his bloody end.
So trim the lanterns, pour yerself something warming, and keep an eye on the shoreline.
There may be someone waiting in the mist.
Welcome to Episode 78 of The Pirate Republic.

📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY
☠️ October 22, 1717 — Blackbeard Empties the Good Intent
Two merchant ships. One notorious pirate. And not much left in the cargo holds.
By October 1717, Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, was making quite a name for himself along the American coast.
Commanding the pirate sloop Revenge, formerly belonging to the Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet, Blackbeard and his crew were hunting merchant vessels and helping themselves to whatever they fancied.
On October 22, they intercepted two sloops: the Robert of Philadelphia and the Good Intent of Dublin.
Neither ship's name offered much protection.
The pirates plundered their cargo holds, stripping the vessels of valuable goods and supplies. For the unfortunate merchant captains, a profitable Atlantic voyage had become an expensive encounter with one of history's most feared pirates.

Imagine naming your ship the Good Intent, only to encounter a man whose intentions were anything but good.
Blackbeard didn't need a treasure map. He simply waited for someone else's treasure to sail past.
Sometimes the greatest danger on the high seas wasn't a storm. It was a pirate with an empty cargo hold of his own.
⚔️ October 24, 1718 — The Gentleman Pirate Makes His Great Escape!
Stede Bonnet had lost his ship, his freedom, and nearly his head. But he wasn't ready to surrender just yet.
After his capture by Colonel William Rhett at Cape Fear in September 1718, the Gentleman Pirate was hauled to Charles Town, South Carolina, to await trial for piracy.
Unlike his unfortunate crew, who were confined to the town's Watch House, Bonnet was held under guard at the residence of town marshal Nathaniel Partridge.
Not exactly the accommodations one imagines for a notorious pirate.
But on the evening of October 24, Bonnet decided he'd enjoyed enough Southern hospitality.
Together with his sailing master, David Herriot, he slipped past his guards and escaped into the night.
The two fugitives fled by canoe, hoping to put Charles Town—and the hangman's rope—far behind them.
Unfortunately, the weather had other plans.
Foul winds and dwindling supplies forced the escapees toward Sullivan's Island, near the harbor entrance. Governor Robert Johnson dispatched Colonel Rhett to hunt them down.
The search ended badly. Herriot was shot and killed, while Bonnet surrendered and was returned to custody on November 6.
His brief taste of freedom was over.
On December 10, 1718, the Gentleman Pirate would finally meet the hangman at White Point.
🏴☠️ THE PIRATE REPUBLIC TAKE
Only Stede Bonnet could go from wealthy Barbados plantation owner to pirate captain, to Blackbeard's unwanted passenger, to fugitive in a canoe.
And the cruelest irony?
The man who once owned a pirate ship couldn't even make a successful getaway in a rowboat.
Perhaps he should have stuck to reading books in his dressing gown.

👻 HAUNTED SEAS — The Witch of Wellfleet: The Pirate Bride Who Cursed the Sea
Some say she waited for her pirate lover to return. Others say she summoned the storm that killed him.

Along the windswept shores of Cape Cod, there's an old legend about a beautiful young woman named Maria Hallett and the pirate captain who promised to return to her.
That pirate was none other than Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy, one of the most successful pirates of the Golden Age.
According to local folklore, the two fell in love around 1715. But Bellamy was a sailor of modest means, and Maria's family supposedly disapproved of the match.
So Bellamy sailed away to seek his fortune, promising to return a wealthy man and make Maria his bride.
And wealthy he became.
Within a remarkably short time, Bellamy commanded a formidable pirate fleet, his flagship the Whydah Gally carrying a fortune in plunder.
But while Bellamy was gathering treasure, Maria's life was falling apart.
💔 A Love Turned to Tragedy
The legend tells that Maria gave birth to Bellamy's child while he was away. The infant died under tragic circumstances, and Maria was blamed.
Shunned by her neighbors and cast out of her community, she retreated to a lonely dwelling near the dunes of Wellfleet.
There, the grieving woman became known as Goody Hallett—the Witch of Wellfleet.
Some said she practiced dark magic. Others believed she was simply a heartbroken woman driven into isolation by a cruel and unforgiving society.
But the darkest chapter of her story was still to come.
🌊 The Night the Sea Took Black Sam
On April 26, 1717, a violent nor'easter struck Cape Cod.
Bellamy's Whydah, reportedly sailing north toward the woman he loved, was caught in the storm and wrecked off Wellfleet.
The ship broke apart in the raging surf. Bellamy and nearly everyone aboard perished.
His body was never identified.
According to one version of the legend, Maria stood upon the dunes that night, watching helplessly as the vessel carrying her beloved was swallowed by the sea.
But another version tells a far more sinister tale.
Consumed by betrayal and grief, Maria had supposedly turned to witchcraft. When she learned that Bellamy was returning, she summoned a terrible storm to punish him.
Only when the Whydah shattered upon the shoals did she realize the terrible price of her vengeance.
She had destroyed the man she loved.
👻 The Woman Who Still Walks the Shore
For more than three centuries, stories have circulated about a mysterious woman haunting the beaches of Wellfleet.
On dark, stormy nights, some claim to hear a woman's anguished cries carried on the Atlantic wind.
Others tell of a solitary figure wandering the dunes near Marconi Beach, staring endlessly toward the horizon.
Is she searching for the pirate who promised to return?
Or mourning the terrible curse she unleashed?
No one knows.
The Whydah was real. Her wreck was discovered in 1984. But historians have never conclusively established Maria Hallett's identity—or even whether she existed as the legend describes.
Perhaps that's what makes the story so haunting.
Somewhere beneath the cold Atlantic lie the remains of Black Sam Bellamy's treasure ship.
And somewhere along the lonely shores of Cape Cod, legend says his bride is still waiting.
🏴☠️ THE PIRATE REPUBLIC TAKE
Black Sam Bellamy captured a fortune, commanded hundreds of pirates, and became one of the most successful sea robbers of his age.
But according to legend, the one treasure he wanted most was waiting for him on Cape Cod.
He conquered the seas, only to be claimed by them—just miles from the woman he loved.
And if you ever find yourself walking Marconi Beach on a stormy October night, listen carefully.
That might not be the wind.

💰🏴☠️ PIRATE BOOTY OF THE WEEK
Bellamy's Bride: The Search for Maria Hallett of Cape Cod
Every pirate legend has two sides. This one has a ghost.
This week's plunder is a perfect companion to our Haunted Seas tale: Bellamy's Bride, by Kathleen Brunelle.
Was Maria Hallett truly the sweetheart of the notorious pirate Black Sam Bellamy? Did she become the feared Witch of Wellfleet? And how much of her tragic story is history—and how much is legend?
Brunelle goes searching for the woman behind the folklore, investigating the romance, the rumors of witchcraft, and the mysteries surrounding Bellamy's doomed voyage aboard the Whydah.
For anyone fascinated by pirate history, Cape Cod mysteries, and ghost stories with a possible grain of truth, this is a treasure worth adding to yer bookshelf.

☠️ Captain’s Log
And there ye have it, mateys—another week of plunder, peril, and things that go bump in the night!
Blackbeard's still collecting cargo, Stede Bonnet's running out of luck, and somewhere along the shores of Cape Cod, the Witch of Wellfleet may still be waiting for her pirate to come home.
But don't extinguish those lanterns just yet.
Next week, our Haunted Seas voyage reaches its final—and darkest—destination. With Halloween upon us, we'll be sailing into waters where even the bravest pirates might think twice about dropping anchor.
Until then, keep yer powder dry, yer rum close, and yer eyes on the horizon.
And if ye hear a woman crying along a deserted shore after midnight…
Best keep walking.
Fair winds, following seas, and a touch of Halloween mischief!
