Captain Kidd’s treasure, the truth about pirate food, and a chance to join a pirate crew. Episode 48 - Dated in the logbooks 3-27-26
Pirate stories are filled with gold, treasure maps, and chests buried on distant shores.
But the reality of pirate life was far less glamorous.
This week, we set sail between myth and truth — exploring the legend of Captain Kidd’s buried treasure, the harsh reality of what pirates actually ate at sea, and the adventures that keep pirate lore alive today.
Because in the world of pirates…
the truth is often stranger than the legend.
🏴☠️ This Week in Pirate History
Captain Kidd and the Treasure That Won’t Stay Buried
Few pirates are more closely tied to buried treasure than Captain William Kidd.
And yet… the truth is far stranger than the legend.

Kidd didn’t begin as a pirate at all. He was a privateer, commissioned by the English government to hunt pirates and protect trade routes. But somewhere along the way, his voyage turned — whether by desperation, bad luck, or opportunity — and Kidd became the very thing he was meant to destroy.
Facing arrest upon returning to the American colonies, Kidd made a desperate move.
👉 He buried part of his treasure on Gardiners Island in 1699.
The cache included:
gold dust
silver bars
coins
valuable goods taken at sea
But here’s the twist…
Kidd intended to use the treasure as leverage, hoping to prove his value to authorities and avoid execution.
It didn’t work.
The treasure was recovered by officials and sent to England as evidence against him. Kidd was later tried and hanged in 1701.
💰 So Why Are We Still Searching?
Because rumors never stopped.
Stories spread that Kidd had:
buried more treasure elsewhere
hidden caches along the American coast
left behind maps or clues
For over 300 years, treasure hunters have searched from:
Long Island
New England
Nova Scotia
even the Caribbean
But no confirmed cache has ever been found beyond the original.
And yet…
👉 the legend persists.
Because in the pirate world, the idea of buried treasure is often more powerful than the treasure itself.

⚓ Life Aboard a Pirate Ship
What Pirates Actually Ate
If pirate stories are filled with gold and treasure…
pirate meals were anything but.
Life at sea meant eating whatever could survive weeks or months without spoiling.

🍖 The Reality of Pirate Food
Forget roasted feasts and overflowing tables.
Most pirates survived on:
hardtack (a dry biscuit often full of worms)
salted meat (beef or pork preserved in brine)
dried peas or beans
cheese (when available)
Hardtack was so tough sailors often had to:
soak it in water or rum
or smash it apart before eating
🪱 Yes… There Were Bugs
Over time, food supplies became infested with:
weevils
maggots
mold
Many sailors simply ate it anyway.
As the saying went:
👉 “Better the worm than starvation.”
🍺 What Did Pirates Drink?
Fresh water spoiled quickly at sea, so pirates often drank:
beer
rum
watered-down spirits
Alcohol was sometimes safer than water — and far more enjoyable.
🏝️ Fresh Food Was Treasure
When pirates reached land, they hunted or traded for:
fresh fruit
fish
turtles
livestock
These meals were rare… and often celebrated.
Because after weeks of hardtack and salt meat…
👉 a fresh meal was worth more than gold.

🦜 Plunder Pick of the Week
Pirate Treasure Chest Replica
Every pirate dreams of one thing:
A chest filled with gold.

This week’s plunder is a pirate treasure chest replica, perfect for display, storage, or adding a touch of adventure to your space.
With its aged wood look and metal detailing, it feels like something hauled from the hold of a captured galleon.
Fill it with:
coins
keepsakes
or your own “plunder”
Because sometimes the treasure isn’t what’s inside…
…it’s the story that comes with it.
