Forgotten pirates, brutal medicine, and the tools of battle from the Golden Age.
⚓ Ahoy, Ye Sea Dogs,
Not every pirate met a glorious end with treasure in hand and legend in their wake.
Some were forgotten. Some refused to change. And some met their fate at the end of a rope.
This week’s voyage sails into the harsher truths of pirate life — from the nameless souls lost to history to the brutal realities of injury and survival at sea.
So grab a dram, steady your sea legs… and let’s chart a course into the darker side of the pirate world.
🏴☠️ This Week in Pirate History
Rogues, Rebellions, and Reckonings (March 17–22)
⚰️ March 17 — The Death of Pirate John Brown
John Brown is not a name sung in taverns or etched into legend.
And that be exactly why it matters.
The name appears in scattered records across the Golden Age — trial documents, execution lists, faded ink in colonial ledgers. Not a captain… not a terror of the seas… just another sailor who chose the black flag.
And like many of his kind, his story ends the same way:
👉 At the end of a rope.

By the early 1700s, the noose had become the empire’s answer to piracy. Ports from Jamaica to Charleston displayed the bodies of executed pirates in chains, left to sway in the salt air as a warning to all who dared follow.
John Brown represents the truth most tales leave out:
Not every pirate became a legend…but many still paid the same price.
🔥 March 21 — Charles Vane Turns Pirate Again
Few men sailed with more defiance thanCharles Vane.
Given the chance at redemption through a royal pardon, Vane cast it aside like so much ballast and returned to piracy.
He was a man who would not bend.
When cornered, he burned ships to escape
When ordered to surrender, he refused
When offered mercy, he chose the black flag

Vane’s return marked him as one of the most dangerous rogues of his time — a pirate who would rather die free than live under the crown.
And in the end…
that is exactly what happened.
🗡️ March 22 — The Birth of Benito de Soto
From the far edge of the pirate age cameBenito de Soto — a man whose name would be feared across the Atlantic.
Not a rogue seeking freedom… but something colder.
After mutinying aboard a vessel that would become the Burla Negra, de Soto carved a brutal path across the seas:
Ships taken without warning
Crews slaughtered to silence witnesses
No mercy, no code
His attack on the Morning Star would become one of the most chilling tales of late-era piracy.
If the early pirates were rebels…
de Soto was something far darker.
A final shadow at the dying edge of the pirate age.

⚓ Life Aboard a Pirate Ship
Pirate Medicine & Injuries
Life at sea was no gentle voyage.
Before a blade ever crossed in battle, danger lurked in every rope, every wave, every splintered plank of the ship itself.
⚔️ Wounds of Battle
Pirates fought close and brutal:
cutlass against cutlass
pistol smoke in the air
cannon fire splintering wood into deadly shards
Many men did not fall to blades… but to flying splinters, driven like daggers through flesh when cannonballs struck.
🪚 The Surgeon’s Trade

A ship’s surgeon was worth more than gold.
Armed with saw, blade, and iron, he worked quickly — for speed meant survival.
There was no mercy in the tools:
limbs removed in minutes
wounds stitched with coarse thread
flesh burned shut with hot iron
Rum served as both courage and anesthesia.
And many a man bit down on leather… or his own arm… to endure the pain.
🦿 Marks of Survival

The legends be true:
wooden legs
hooks for hands
eyes lost to powder and steel
These were not costumes…
They were the marks of men who lived when others did not.
🦠 The Real Killer — Disease
Steel might wound… but disease finished the job.
Scurvy rotted men from within:
gums bleeding
teeth falling
bodies wasting away
A simple cut could fester into death.
On the sea, survival was never guaranteed.
⚓ A Pirate’s Code of Compensation
And yet — pirates held to one surprising rule:
They paid their wounded.
Lose a limb, earn a share.Lose your sight, earn your due.
A strange fairness among thieves…but fairness nonetheless.
