Ahoy Pirate Republic Crew,

Fifty weeks.

Fifty voyages into the storm.

Fifty times we’ve raised the black flag and sailed straight into the heart of pirate history, treasure lore, and the wild world that refuses to let piracy die.

And through it all—you’ve been part of the crew.

Whether you joined at the first cannon blast or climbed aboard somewhere along the way… this Republic exists because of you.

This isn’t just a newsletter.

This is the home of pirate culture.

A place where Blackbeard still hunts the shipping lanes, lost treasure still whispers from the deep, and every week brings a story worth telling.

So for Issue #50

We’re not easing off the wind.

We’re going bigger.Richer.More dangerous.

Let’s set sail.

📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY

Blackbeard Captures the Protestant Caesar (April 9, 1717)

On April 9, 1717, the man who would become the most feared pirate in history made one of his earliest power moves.

Blackbeard—still rising, still building his legend—captured a merchant vessel known as the Protestant Caesar.

It wasn’t just another prize.

It was a signal.

At this point, Blackbeard was transitioning from opportunistic raider… to calculated predator. Each captured ship meant more than cargo—it meant weapons, supplies, and most importantly, reputation.

And reputation was everything.

Word spread fast across the Atlantic:

A new captain was hunting the shipping lanes.

Not reckless. Not desperate. But deliberate.

Within months, that same man would command the Queen Anne’s Revenge, blockade Charleston, and cement his place in pirate legend.

But on this day—April 9th—it was still the beginning.

The moment the storm started forming.

💰 FEATURE: THE 5 RICHEST HAULS OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIRACY

Most pirates scraped by on rum and luck.

But a rare few pulled off heists so massive… they changed their fate overnight.

These weren’t just lucky finds.

They were calculated strikes, brutal battles, and moments where everything hung on a single decision.

🥇#1 Henry Avery vs. The Ganj-i-Sawai (1695)

Henry Avery

The biggest pirate score in history didn’t come easy.

Avery and his crew hunted the Mughal treasure fleet across the Indian Ocean—knowing full well they were targeting one of the richest empires on Earth.

When they finally caught the Ganj-i-Sawai, it was no helpless merchant.

The ship was heavily armed, carrying dozens of cannons and hundreds of armed guards.

The battle opened with cannon fire—Avery’s ships circling like wolves. One lucky shot from the pirates crippled the Mughal ship’s main mast, throwing it into chaos.

Then came the moment that decided everything:

A cannon aboard the Ganj-i-Sawai exploded—killing crew and shattering morale.

Avery didn’t hesitate.

He ordered the boarding.

Grappling hooks flew. Pistols fired. Steel met steel.

Hours later… the richest prize ever taken at sea belonged to pirates.

💰 Estimated value today: $200+ million

And with it, Avery became the most wanted man in the world.

🥈#2 Black Sam Bellamy vs. The Whydah Gally (1717)

Samuel Bellamy

Bellamy didn’t win his fortune with brute force.

He won it with speed and precision.

The Whydah Gally was returning from the Caribbean slave trade, weighed down with treasure—gold, silver, sugar, and rum.

Bellamy’s ship closed fast.

Instead of a drawn-out battle, he used intimidation and maneuvering—cutting off escape, positioning for a decisive strike.

The message was clear:

Fight… and be destroyed.

Surrender… and live.

The Whydah’s captain chose wisely.

Bellamy took the ship almost intact—along with its massive cargo.

He upgraded it into his flagship, instantly becoming one of the most powerful pirates in the Atlantic.

💰 Estimated value today: $120+ million

Weeks later, a violent storm shattered that dream—and sent the treasure to the ocean floor.

🥉#3 Bartholomew Roberts vs. The Portuguese Treasure Fleet (1721)

Bartholomew Roberts

This wasn’t a single ship.

This was a convoy.

Off the coast of Brazil, Roberts spotted a Portuguese fleet—dozens of ships sailing together under heavy protection, loaded with gold and diamonds bound for Europe.

Most pirates would’ve turned away.

Roberts sailed straight in.

Flying false colors, he slipped into the convoy unnoticed—posing as just another merchant vessel.

Then, at the perfect moment, he struck.

Cannons roared.

Before the escorts could react, Roberts isolated one of the richest ships in the fleet—a treasure vessel packed with unimaginable wealth.

The Portuguese warships scrambled—but it was too late.

Roberts had already seized the prize and broken away.

💰 Estimated value today: $100+ million

It was one of the boldest—and smartest—raids in pirate history.

🎖️ #4 Olivier Levasseur vs. The Nossa Senhora do Cabo (1721)

This wasn’t just a rich prize.

It was a floating cathedral of gold.

In 1721, Levasseur—known as La Buse—joined forces with fellow pirate John Taylor off the island of Réunion. Their target: the Portuguese treasure ship Nossa Senhora do Cabo.

But this wasn’t supposed to be an easy fight.

The ship carried:

  • A Portuguese viceroy

  • A full escort

  • And one of the richest cargoes ever to leave the East Indies

Then fate intervened.

A violent storm had already torn through the convoy—scattering its defenses and leaving the Cabo damaged, isolated, and vulnerable.

Levasseur saw the opportunity immediately.

No hesitation. No drawn-out chase.

The pirates closed in fast.

Cannons fired. Grappling hooks flew.

Boarding parties stormed the deck before the Portuguese could fully regroup.

What followed was swift—and decisive.

The ship fell.

And what they found aboard became legend:

  • Chests of gold and silver

  • Diamonds and precious stones

  • Religious treasures, including a jeweled cross said to be worth a king’s ransom

💰 Estimated value today: $100M+ (some say far more)

But the real legend came later.

Captured years afterward, Levasseur was led to the gallows.

And just before the noose tightened…

He threw a cryptogram into the crowd and shouted:

“Find my treasure, the one who can!”

To this day, it’s never been definitively solved.

🎖️ #5 Thomas Tew vs. The Red Sea Prize (1693–1694)

Before Avery.

Before the Mughal fleet became the ultimate target…

There was Tew.

Sailing out of Madagascar, Thomas Tew led a small but disciplined crew into the Red Sea—one of the richest and most dangerous trade routes in the world.

They weren’t hunting random merchants.

They were hunting empire-level wealth.

When they finally spotted their target—a heavily laden Mughal vessel—the stakes were clear:

Win… and become rich beyond imagination.Lose… and be wiped from the sea.

Tew made his move.

His ship closed in fast, catching the larger vessel off guard.

Instead of trading long-range cannon fire, Tew relied on aggression and timing—bringing his ship alongside before the enemy could fully respond.

Boarding crews surged forward.

Pistols cracked. Blades clashed.

The Mughal defenders fought—but not long enough.

Tew’s men overwhelmed the deck and seized control.

What they found aboard changed everything:

  • Gold and silver in staggering quantities

  • Trade goods worth fortunes back in Europe

  • Enough wealth that every crew member walked away rich

💰 Estimated value today: $50–100+ million

When Tew returned, his success spread like wildfire.

Word reached every port:

There was unimaginable wealth in the East…

And it could be taken.

That single raid helped spark the Pirate Round—the wave of expeditions that would later produce legends like Henry Avery.

Tew proved it could be done.

Others would follow.

⚔️ Final Word

Gold made these pirates famous.

But it was how they took it that made them legends.

Cannons.

Deception.

Fear.

And in some cases… sheer luck.

For Issue #50… we’re not dealing in trinkets.

We’re dealing in gold.

Not replicas. Not souvenirs.

The real thing—past and present.

🪙 Modern Treasure: American Gold Eagle (1/10 oz)

A piece of gold you can hold in your hand… minted for the modern age.

This American Gold Eagle is struck from real gold, backed by the U.S. government, and carries the same timeless appeal that’s driven treasure hunters for centuries.

Clean. Precise. Untouched by time.

The kind of coin that feels like the start of a treasure chest.

Perfect for:

  • First-time collectors

  • Stacking real gold

  • Or building your own modern-day hoard

⚓ Historic Treasure: Spanish Gold Escudo (1600s)

Now this…

This is the kind of coin pirates actually fought for.

Struck during the reign of Philip III of Spain, this gold Escudo was born at the legendary Seville Mint—the gateway where New World treasure flooded into Europe.

Each coin was hand-struck, irregular, imperfect… and absolutely alive with history.

This isn’t just currency.

It’s the same kind of gold that:

  • Crossed the Atlantic in Spanish treasure fleets

  • Passed through the hands of kings, merchants… and pirates

  • Fueled the very Golden Age we’re celebrating

You’re not looking at a replica.

You’re looking at something that could’ve been in a chest on a galleon.

⚔️ Final Word

One coin is flawless.

The other is forged in fire, empire… and chaos.

Both belong in a proper pirate’s collection.
