A pirate ship for sale, Blackbeard’s brief retirement, and a kingdom waiting to be explored... Issue #56 – May 22st 2026

Ahoy, Me Hearties

Some pirates seek treasure. Others seek freedom.

And a rare few leave behind something bigger than gold—

A legend.

This week, we follow the paths pirates take after the smoke clears.

From pardons and gallows…To ships searching for new captains…To places where adventure still waits.

The sea is calling.

Let’s answer.

Welcome to Episode 56 of The Pirate Republic.

📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY

⚔️ Three Roads Under the Black Flag

Not every pirate story ends the same.

Some begin with ambition.

Some end with redemption.

And some…

End at the gallows.

☠️ May 19, 1690 – Edward Low Is Born

On May 19, 1690, one of the most feared—and brutal—pirates of the Golden Age entered the world:

Edward Low.

If Black Bart was disciplined… Low was chaos.

His reputation became legendary not because of how many ships he took—

But because of how cruel he was said to be.

Stories surrounding Low describe:

  • Captured crews tortured

  • Ships burned

  • Punishments designed to spread fear

Whether every tale is true or not… His reputation alone became one of his strongest weapons.

At his peak, Low reportedly captured well over 100 vessels.

Even pirates feared becoming too much like Edward Low.

May 20, 1718 – Blackbeard Accepts the King’s Pardon

One day you’re terrorizing the Caribbean.

The next… You’re trying retirement.

On May 20, 1718, Blackbeard accepted the King’s Pardon offered through Charles Eden.

For a brief moment Blackbeard was officially legitimate. He settled near North Carolina.

Tried life as a respectable citizen. (Or at least respectable by pirate standards.)

Unfortunately… Retirement didn’t stick. Within months he was back to questionable dealings and opportunistic captures.

Turns out—

Some men aren’t built for quiet lives.

⚔️ May 23, 1701 – Captain Kidd Meets the Gallows

The end came for one of history’s most famous names.

On May 23, 1701, William Kidd was executed in London.

And the execution became almost as famous as the man.

Legend says:

The rope snapped during the first attempt.

Kidd survived. Only to be hanged again.

His body was later displayed publicly as a warning to every sailor who thought piracy looked glamorous.

And yet… The opposite happened.

Captain Kidd became immortal.

His lost treasure legends still inspire treasure hunters today.

Pirate Republic Take

Three pirates.

Three very different fates.

Edward Low became feared.

Blackbeard tried to quit.

Captain Kidd became a warning.

But all three proved the same thing: Once you raise the black flag…

It’s hard to lower it.

PIRATE TREASURE OF THE WEEK – A REAL PIRATE SHIP IS FOR SALE

🏴‍☠️ Avast! Toronto’s Most Famous Pirate Ship Is Looking for a New Captain

Some people buy a sports car.

Some buy a beach house.

And apparently…

Some buy a pirate fleet.

After more than 15 years of operation, Pirate Life Adventures—one of Canada’s best-known pirate attractions—is officially being offered for sale.

But this isn’t one lonely ship tied to a dock. The treasure includes:

⚓ Four Transport Canada–certified pirate ships⚓ Waterfront leases and operating rights⚓ Existing bookings and customer systems⚓ Established pirate experiences and events⚓ A brand that already draws thousands of guests each year

⚔️ Meet the Fleet

Each vessel is roughly:

  • 🏴‍☠️ About 40 feet long

  • 👥 Built for around 40 passengers plus crew

  • 💥 Equipped with 24 functioning water cannons

  • ⚓ Powered by twin Yamaha outboards

  • 🗺️ Designed for immersive pirate adventures, charters, escape-room experiences, and theatrical cruises

    That means… You aren’t buying a boat

You’re buying a pirate kingdom.

🧭 Pirate Republic Take

Imagine the possibilities. Captain Blackquill’s Floating Republic.

Storm of Time Pirate Cruises. Live sea shanties. Treasure hunts.

Author signings aboard ship.

(Alright… now my imagination is getting carried away.)

But there’s something undeniably cool about this. Because for one lucky buyer—

The dream isn’t to sail like a pirate.

It’s to own the ship.

🏴‍☠️ CAPTAIN’S QUESTION OF THE WEEK

⚓ You Just Bought the Pirate Ship… What Do You Name Her?

So… You signed the papers.

The crew is assembled.

The black flag is folded and waiting.

There’s just one problem.

Every great ship needs a name.

Would yours be:

☠️ The Queen Anne’s Revenge (classic choice)⚔️ The Crimson Fortune🌊 The Storm Chaser💰 The Devil’s Dividend🏴‍☠️ The Republic🗺️ The Wandering TideThe Sea Ghost🔥 The Last Horizon

Or something entirely your own?

Reply and tell us:

If you owned a pirate ship… what would you name her?

Captain Blackquill’s answer?

The Tempest’s Fortune

Because every good adventure begins with a storm.

🎉🏴‍☠️ PIRATE EVENT OF THE WEEK

⚔️ Kingdom Faire – A Renaissance Adventure in New York

Every now and then…

A festival comes along that feels less like an event—

And more like walking through a portal.

Welcome to Kingdom Faire.

📍 Putnam County • Carmel, New York📅 Festival Season Begins

This isn’t just another Renaissance Faire.

Kingdom Faire blends:

  • ⚔️ Adventure

  • 🏴‍☠️ Pirate energy

  • 🎭 Interactive storytelling

  • 🎶 Live entertainment

  • 🛍️ Merchants and handcrafted treasures

Into a world built to be explored.

🧭 Choose Your Path

At Kingdom Faire… You don’t just show up. You become part of the kingdom.

Will you arrive as:

🏴‍☠️ A pirate captain seeking fortune?⚔️ A wandering swordsman?👑 A noble?🗺️ Or simply a traveler chasing stories?

There’s something fitting about that. Because real pirates weren’t just raiders.

They were adventurers.

⚓ Pirate Republic Take

This one feels especially fun because pirate festival season and Ren Faire season are beginning to overlap more every year.

Meaning:

More tricorn hats.More sea shanties.More excuses to become someone else for the day.

And honestly—

That’s half the magic.

☠️ Captain’s Log

Fair winds behind ye,Salt in the air—

May your pockets stay heavy,And your troubles stay rare.

And if adventure comes calling…

Answer.

Until next tide,Captain Blackquill
