👻 Captain Kidd's Treasure Has a Terrifying Guardian...

A headless ghost, blue flames, Blackbeard's chocolate crime, and a Halloween pirate adventure!... Issue #79 – Oct 30th 2026
Ahoy, Matey
The witching hour approaches, the seas are restless, and something wicked is stirring beneath the waves!
Welcome aboard our Halloween edition of The Pirate Republic, where the dead refuse to rest, buried treasure comes with a terrible price, and even the most fearsome pirates have a few surprises waiting in the shadows.
This week, we're sailing straight into the darkness with the chilling legend of Captain Kidd's cursed treasure. Somewhere on a lonely Connecticut island, a headless guardian is said to protect a buried fortune—and those foolish enough to disturb it may find themselves running for their lives!
But the living pirates were plenty dangerous, too! Black Bart Roberts is on a three-day plundering rampage, while Blackbeard commits a crime against chocolate lovers everywhere by sending a valuable cargo of cocoa straight to Davy Jones's locker.
And speaking of chocolate, we've found a wickedly dark Halloween treat for this week's Plunder Pick, along with a swashbuckling Renaissance faire where ye can celebrate the season in proper pirate fashion.
So light yer lanterns, pour something strong, and keep a weather eye on the shadows.
For tonight, mateys, the dead may be sailing with us.

📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY
☠️ October 30, 1717 — Blackbeard's Great Cocoa Heist!
One pirate, two sloops, and a whole lot of chocolate headed for the bottom of the sea.
On October 30, 1717, a merchant captain named Goelet was sailing from Curaçao toward New York with a valuable cargo of cocoa when he encountered a man whose reputation was quickly becoming the terror of the Atlantic.
Edward Thatch. Better known as Blackbeard.
At the time, Blackbeard was still building his fearsome reputation, commanding a small fleet of sloops and hunting merchant vessels along the American coast.
Captain Goelet's ship must have looked like an excellent prize.
And it was. Just not for the reason one might expect.
Rather than keeping the cocoa and selling it for a tidy profit, Blackbeard reportedly ordered the entire cargo thrown overboard!
Then came the real purpose of the attack.
Blackbeard transferred the equipment and supplies from one of his existing sloops onto Goelet's newly captured vessel, effectively trading up to a better ship.
And what became of poor Captain Goelet?
In a peculiar twist of pirate generosity, Blackbeard handed him the discarded sloop, the Sea Nymph, and allowed him to continue his voyage toward New York.
Goelet had lost his ship and his cargo, but at least he had a vessel to get him home.
As for Blackbeard, he sailed away with his new acquisition, leaving a trail of floating cocoa behind him.
☠️ October 1720 — Black Bart Roberts Captures 15 Ships in Three Days!
Some pirates were content with a single prize. Black Bart apparently preferred to buy in bulk.
In late October 1720, the waters around the Caribbean island of St. Lucia became a particularly dangerous place for merchant captains.
The reason? Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts had arrived.
And he was having a remarkably productive week.
Roberts, the Welsh pirate who would become one of the most successful sea robbers of the Golden Age, had already been terrorizing shipping throughout the Atlantic. Earlier that autumn, he had sailed into the harbor at St. Kitts with black flags flying, drums beating, and trumpets sounding.
Merchant crews knew what that meant.
After spending time at St. Bartholomew, where the French governor reportedly permitted the pirates to remain for several weeks, Roberts returned to sea.
By October 25, his ships were hunting off St. Lucia.
Over the next three days, Roberts and his men reportedly captured as many as 15 French and English vessels.
That's an average of five ships a day!
Among the prizes was the Greyhound, whose chief mate, James Skyrme, joined Roberts's crew. Skyrme would eventually become a pirate captain himself, commanding the Ranger.
For merchants sailing through the Caribbean, Roberts's sudden appearance was disastrous. One moment they were carrying goods between colonial ports; the next, they were facing armed pirates with very little interest in negotiating fair prices.
And Roberts was far from finished.
His raids would continue into 1721, spreading fear throughout the West Indies and making his name notorious on both sides of the Atlantic.
Black Bart's career would eventually be credited with the capture of hundreds of vessels.
But even by his standards, 15 ships in three days was quite a haul.
Fifteen ships. Three days.
Black Bart wasn't running a pirate crew. He was running a hostile takeover department.
Imagine being the sixteenth merchant captain to sail into those waters.
“Captain, there are pirates ahead!”
“Again? Haven't they taken enough ships this week?”
Apparently not.
Blackbeard may have been the most famous pirate of the Golden Age, but when it came to sheer volume, Black Bart was operating an entirely different business model.

👻 HAUNTED SEAS — Captain Kidd's Cursed Treasure: The Dead Man Who Guards the Gold
They came searching for buried pirate treasure. What they found was something that should have stayed buried.
On a moonless night, a small party of treasure hunters slipped ashore on Charles Island, just off the coast of Milford, Connecticut.
They carried shovels, lanterns, and an old story that had lured fortune seekers to the island for generations.
Somewhere beneath the earth, they believed, lay the lost treasure of the infamous pirate Captain William Kidd.
But the legend came with a warning.
The treasure had a guardian. And he was not among the living.
☠️ Something Beneath the Earth
According to an old Connecticut ghost story, the men began digging at a spot believed to conceal Kidd's riches.
The hours passed. Their lanterns flickered in the darkness. The only sounds were the scraping of shovels and the restless waters of Long Island Sound.
Then, at last, a shovel struck something solid.
An iron chest!
The men crowded around the excavation, imagining the gold and jewels that might lie within.
But before they could open their prize, something moved in the darkness.
A figure emerged from the shadows.
It wore the clothing of a man long dead.
And it had no head.

The apparition bounded toward the treasure hunters, terrifying them as it plunged into the excavation.
Suddenly, eerie blue flames erupted from the ground.
The men abandoned their tools and fled for their lives, scrambling toward their boat as the supernatural fire illuminated the night.
When they finally dared return, the treasure was gone.
And so was the hole.
The earth appeared undisturbed, as though no one had ever dug there at all.
🏴☠️ The Pirate Behind the Curse
Captain William Kidd was no imaginary pirate.
Born in Scotland, Kidd began his career as a privateer before embarking on the voyage that would make him one of the most notorious men of his age.
In 1698, he captured the wealthy merchant vessel Quedagh Merchant in the Indian Ocean, a prize that helped seal his reputation as a pirate.
But Kidd's greatest legend wasn't born at sea.
It was buried on land.
In 1699, while attempting to clear his name, Kidd concealed a portion of his treasure on Gardiners Island, New York.
That treasure was real.
Authorities subsequently recovered it, proving that at least one of the countless stories about Kidd's hidden riches had a foundation in fact.
Kidd was eventually taken to London, tried for piracy and murder, and hanged at Execution Dock on May 23, 1701.
His body was displayed in chains along the Thames as a warning to other would-be pirates.
But hanging the captain did little to bury his legend.
👻 The Treasure That Refused to Be Found
Over the centuries, stories of Kidd's missing fortune spread along the Atlantic coast.
Lonely islands, deserted beaches, and secluded coves all became possible hiding places.
And wherever the treasure was said to lie, supernatural warnings often followed.
Charles Island developed its own reputation as a cursed place, with tales of strange apparitions and terrible consequences for those who disturbed its secrets.
The story of the headless guardian and the blue flames appeared in Charles M. Skinner's 1896 collection, Myths and Legends of Our Own Land.
But here's where history and legend part company.
There is no reliable evidence that Kidd buried treasure on Charles Island, nor that any headless apparition ever defended it.
The real treasure recovered from Gardiners Island is documented history.
The ghostly guardian belongs to folklore.
Yet perhaps that is why the legend has survived for so long.
Because every treasure hunter who sets out to find Captain Kidd's lost gold must confront one unsettling possibility.
What if the treasure isn't lost at all?
What if someone—or something—is making certain it stays exactly where it was buried?
And on a dark Halloween night, with the tide rising around Charles Island, perhaps the most frightening question isn't whether Captain Kidd's treasure is still there.
It's whether the thing guarding it is still waiting.
🏴☠️ THE PIRATE REPUBLIC TAKE
Captain Kidd was hanged in 1701, but apparently nobody informed his treasure's security department.
A headless guardian, blue flames, and a hole that fills itself back in?
That's some impressive protection for a buried chest.
No lock to pick. No password to steal. And absolutely no customer service.
So if ye find an old treasure map pointing toward Charles Island, remember this:
Gold may be worth its weight in doubloons.
But if the fellow guarding it doesn't have a head, perhaps it's best to leave him the chest.
Happy Halloween, mateys! 🎃☠️

Taza Chocolate — 95% Wicked Dark Amaze Bars

Back in 1717, Blackbeard captured a merchant vessel carrying a valuable cargo of cocoa from Curaçao. And what did the notorious pirate do with all those precious beans?
He tossed them overboard!
Aye, even the most feared pirate on the high seas could make a terrible decision.
This Halloween, we're correcting Blackbeard's mistake with something appropriately wicked: Taza Chocolate's 95% Wicked Dark Amaze Bars!
Made with stone-ground cacao using hand-carved granite millstones, these intensely dark chocolate bars deliver bold flavor and a distinctive texture. At 95% cacao, this is serious chocolate for pirates who prefer their treats dark as a moonless Caribbean night.
Even better, they're Certified Organic, vegan-friendly, dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free.
And this particular treasure comes as a case of ten 2.5-ounce bars. That's enough to provision the whole crew—or hide away in yer own private treasure chest.
THE PIRATE REPUBLIC TAKE: Blackbeard may have sent his cocoa to Davy Jones's locker, but we're keeping ours safely aboard.

☠️ Captain’s Log
And so, me hearties, we reach the end of another voyage—and the final chapter of our Haunted Seas Halloween adventures.
We've sailed alongside phantom ships, heard whispers of Blackbeard's restless spirit, followed the curse of Black Sam Bellamy's lost love, and now stood face-to-face with the headless guardian of Captain Kidd's buried treasure.
Four weeks of haunted history, restless souls, and mysteries the ocean refuses to surrender.
But remember, mateys, the sea has swallowed more secrets than any treasure chest could ever hold. And just because Halloween ends doesn't mean the ghosts stop sailing.
As the lanterns burn low and the October winds howl through the rigging, raise a glass to the pirates who came before us—both the living and the long departed.
And should ye hear footsteps on the deck tonight, when all yer crew are fast asleep…
Perhaps it's best not to investigate.
Until next Friday, keep yer powder dry, yer cutlass sharp, and yer chocolate well away from Blackbeard!
Happy Halloween from The Pirate Republic! 🎃🏴☠️
