A Pirate Truce, A Modern Rum, and a Ship Still Sailing
Ahoy, ye seekers of salt and story—
This week, we sail back to a moment when the sea held its breath… and pirates chose gold over gunpowder.
Three captains. One shattered treasure fleet. And not a single cannon fired.
But don’t mistake it for peace—this was piracy at its most cunning.
From the wreckage of Spanish riches to a modern pirate bottling his own rum, the spirit of the Republic still courses through the tides.
Let’s set sail.
🏴☠️ This Week in Pirate History
April 3 1716 — When Pirates Met Pirates
In the early days of the Pirate Republic, the greatest threat to a pirate…
was often another pirate.
In April 1716,Henry Jennings — one of the first leaders of the Nassau pirate stronghold — arrived upon a scene already in motion.
Two rising figures were hard at work:
Samuel Bellamy
Paulsgrave Williams
They were looting the wreckage of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet, which had been smashed apart by a hurricane along the Florida coast.

Gold and silver lay scattered among the wrecks… and pirates had come to claim it.
⚓ A Meeting of Ambition
Jennings was no ordinary pirate.
He had already:
led raids against Spanish salvage camps
seized large amounts of recovered treasure
helped establish Nassau as a pirate haven
When he encountered Bellamy and Williams, it wasn’t just a meeting…
👉 it was a collision of ambitions.
Bellamy, still early in his rise, would soon become known as “Black Sam”, one of the most successful pirates of the age.
Jennings, already established, represented the first wave of Pirate Republic leadership.
💰 Treasure Without a Fight
Unlike many pirate encounters, this one did not erupt into violence.
There was:
no cannon fire
no boarding action
no bloodshed
Instead, the pirates shared the opportunity, continuing to plunder the wreck site rather than fight over it.
But make no mistake…
This was not friendship.
It was calculation.
🏴☠️ The Birth of a Pirate Network
Moments like this reveal something often overlooked:
Piracy wasn’t always chaos.
It was also:
cooperation
opportunism
and shifting alliances
These early interactions helped shape what would become the Pirate Republic of Nassau, where crews operated in loose networks rather than constant conflict.
⚓ What Came Next
From this moment:
Bellamy would rise to legendary status before his death in 1717
Williams would continue operating in the pirate world
Jennings would eventually accept a pardon and leave piracy behind
Three pirates.
Three different paths.
All crossing briefly over a field of Spanish gold.
🧭 The Bigger Story
The wreck of the 1715 fleet created more than treasure…
It created pirates.
And on that April day, standing over scattered gold and broken ships, the next chapter of the Golden Age of Piracy was already unfolding.

🏴☠️ Pirates in Modern Culture
Johnny Depp Launches a Real Pirate’s Rum

For years, he played one of the most famous pirates in film history.
Now, Johnny Depp is stepping into the role for real — at least when it comes to rum.
Depp has officially launched Three Hearts Rum, a premium Caribbean-inspired spirit created with longtime friend Bobby DeLeon.
🥃 A Rum Rooted in Pirate Waters
This isn’t just another celebrity label.
The rum is:
Produced in the Dominican Republic
Aged for seven years in bourbon and cognac barrels
Designed to reflect traditional Caribbean rum-making
Depp’s connection to the Caribbean runs deep, having spent years living among the islands and embracing their culture.
🏴☠️ A Bottle With a Story
The design of the bottle leans heavily into pirate symbolism:
A skull motif (a reminder to live fully)
Lightning bolts representing friendship
Three hearts symbolizing personal meaning
A motto etched at the base:👉 “No Fear. No Malice. No Envy.”
It feels less like a product…
…and more like a piece of pirate lore in glass form.
⚓ From Screen Pirate to Real Spirit

Let’s be honest — rum and pirates are inseparable.
From grog on the deck of a brig to the taverns of Nassau, rum was the lifeblood of pirate culture.
So in many ways, this feels like a natural evolution:
The man who played a pirate…now bottling the spirit of piracy itself. Get Yours Here!

🏴☠️ Pirate Event / News
20 Years of Pirate Adventure at Salty Sam’s Marina

Not all pirate ships are relics of the past.
Some are still sailing today.
At Salty Sam’s Marina in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, the beloved “Pieces of Eight” pirate ship is celebrating its 20th anniversary — marking two decades of bringing pirate adventure to life for families and treasure seekers alike.
⚓ Built by a Pirate at Heart
The ship was built by Captain David Braithwaite, who didn’t come from a long line of shipbuilders — just a lifelong love of boats and the sea.
Starting with only basic experience (and a backyard sailboat project with his father), Braithwaite spent 19 months constructing the vessel in Virginia.
What began as an ambitious idea became something much bigger.
🏴☠️ From Virginia to Florida Legend
After operating briefly in Virginia Beach, the ship eventually found its home in Florida, where it became a staple of Salty Sam’s Marina.
Over the years, it has:
Entertained thousands of families
Hosted pirate-themed cruises and performances
Become a recognizable icon of Fort Myers Beach
As one owner put it:
👉 “It’s our Disneyworld.”
🌊 Built to Last
The ship has weathered multiple hurricanes — including Hurricane Ian — and remarkably returned to service after only a few months of repairs.
A testament to both its craftsmanship and the care it has received over the years.
⚔️ More Than Just a Ride
This isn’t just a boat tour.
It’s an interactive pirate experience where:
Kids become part of the crew
Sword fights break out on deck
Shy landlubbers transform into full-fledged pirates
One longtime crew member shared:
👉 watching kids come out of their shell is the best part of the job
⚓ Still Sailing After 20 Years
With room for over 100 passengers and a dedicated crew of performers, the Pieces of Eight continues to prove that pirate stories don’t belong only in history books.
They’re still being lived…
right there on the water.
