Welcome to Episode 64 of The Pirate Republic. šĀ THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORYThe Governor, the Pirate Ship, and the GallowsThis week in pirate history reminds us that every pirate story has an ending. For some, it came in a governor's mansion. For others... At the end of a rope. Ā šĀ July 15, 1732 ā Woodes Rogers DiesLove him or hate him, Woodes Rogers changed pirate history forever.  The former privateer became Royal Governor of the Bahamas in 1718 and arrived in Nassau with a simple mission: End the Pirate Republic. He offered the King's Pardon to those willing to surrender. Those who refused soon found themselves hunted by the Royal Navy. Within a few short years, the lawless pirate haven that had once been home to Blackbeard, Charles Vane, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and dozens of other sea rogues was no more. When Rogers died on July 15, 1732, he left behind a mixed legacy. To Britain, he was the man who restored order. To pirates... He was the governor who ended their golden age. Ā Ā āĀ July 20, 1984 ā The Whydah Returns to the Surface For generations, pirate treasure was the stuff of legend. Then came Barry Clifford. On July 20, 1984, Clifford discovered the wreck of the Whydah GallyĀ off Cape Codāthe flagship of the infamous pirate Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy. It became the first authenticated pirate shipwreck ever discovered. Thousands of artifacts have since been recovered, including cannons, pistols, jewelry, coins, navigational instruments, and everyday items that reveal what pirate life was truly like. Perhaps most remarkably, the wreck proved that pirate archaeology wasn't just possible... It was waiting beneath the waves. Ā Ā ā ļøĀ July 21, 1721 ā Walter Kennedy Meets the GallowsNot every pirate became a legend.  Walter Kennedy, once a member of Howell Davis's crew and later captain of his own pirate ship, spent years raiding merchant vessels before being captured in England. On July 21, 1721, Kennedy was hanged at Execution Dock. Like so many pirates before him, he escaped storms, naval patrols, and bloody battles... Only to lose his final fight against the law.  š®š“āā ļøĀ FROM THE CROW'S NESTIs Blackbeard About to Return to Video Games? A newly announced PlayStation 5 adventure, Black Tides: The Curse of Blackbeard, puts players in the boots of Edward Teach Jr., the fictional son of Blackbeard, on a quest to uncover his father's fate and claim a legendary treasure. Along the way, you'll command your own ship, battle rival pirates and the Royal Navy, hunt for treasure, explore pirate havens, and unravel a mystery surrounding the most infamous pirate who ever lived. Assassin's Creed IV: Black FlagĀ still sits atop the throne as the greatest pirate game ever made. Even after more than a decade, few games have captured the freedom, exploration, and romance of the Golden Age of Piracy quite like sailing the Caribbean aboard the Jackdaw. Now that Black Flag ResyncedĀ has arrived for a new generation of players, the bar is even higher. Can Black TidesĀ challenge the king? It's far too early to know. The announcement trailer is heavy on cinematic storytelling and light on actual gameplay, so there's still plenty we haven't seen. But if the developers can deliver satisfying naval combat, memorable exploration, and a compelling Blackbeard story...
