Ahoy, Me Hearties

Every pirate dreams of becoming a legend.

But legends come in many forms.

Some earn glory through daring raids.

Some earn infamy through fear.

And some simply disappear—leaving behind questions no historian has ever answered.

This week we follow the trail of one pirate who vanished into the horizon, another who left a wake of terror, and a forgotten alliance that saw pirates and indigenous warriors fighting side-by-side against a common foe.

Along the way, we'll gather with fellow pirates beneath the trees of Long Beach and inspect one of the strangest pieces of pirate treasure we've ever featured.

So hoist the colors, me hearties.

Adventure awaits.

Welcome to Episode 57 of The Pirate Republic.

📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY

⚔️ One Pirate Vanishes. Another Rises.

The Golden Age of Piracy was full of battles, treasure, and betrayal.

But perhaps its greatest mystery is what happened after the adventure ended.

This week we look at two pirates whose stories crossed paths in an unexpected way:

One disappeared into legend.

The other was just getting started.

🏴‍☠️ May 30, 1698 – Henry Every Vanishes Into Legend

Few pirates ever achieved what Henry Every accomplished.

After capturing the Mughal treasure ship Ganj-i-Sawai in 1695, Every and his crew made off with one of the richest prizes in pirate history.

The haul was so enormous that it sparked an international crisis.

The Mughal Empire demanded justice.

The English Crown launched a worldwide manhunt.

Rewards were posted.

Governments searched.

Pirate hunters scoured the seas.

Yet somehow...

Henry Every disappeared.

By May 1698, he had largely vanished from the historical record.

No confirmed capture.

No verified grave.

No final confession.

Did he retire rich?

Was he betrayed?

Did he quietly die under another name?

More than 325 years later, nobody knows.

And that mystery is why Henry Every remains one of piracy's most enduring legends.

⚔️ May 29, 1723 – Edward Low Captures the Rebecca

While Every's legend was fading into mystery, another pirate was building his reputation through fear.

On May 29, 1723, Edward Low captured the brigantine Rebecca during a cruise that would help make him one of the most notorious pirates of the age.

Unlike Blackbeard, who cultivated an image...

Or Black Bart Roberts, who built a pirate empire...

Low became infamous for something else:

His cruelty.

Stories spread throughout the Atlantic of captured crews being tortured, mutilated, and terrorized.

Whether every tale was true or not, they helped create one of the most feared reputations in pirate history.

The capture of the Rebecca was just one prize among many.

At his height, Low would take more than one hundred vessels and become one of the most hunted men on the ocean.

⚓ Pirate Republic Take

One pirate escaped history.

One pirate became a nightmare.

Yet both understood the same truth:

The quickest way to become immortal isn't wealth.

It's giving people a story they'll never stop telling.

⚔️🏹 WHEN PIRATES AND WARRIORS JOINED FORCES

The Kuna Alliance Against Spain

Most pirate stories follow a familiar pattern.

Pirates attack.

Empires defend.

Treasure changes hands.

But every now and then...

History throws us a twist.

🏴‍☠️ An Unlikely Alliance

Along the coast of present-day Panama, pirates discovered they weren't the only people who hated Spanish rule.

The Kuna people had spent generations resisting Spanish control of their lands.

Pirates had their own reasons for fighting Spain.

The enemy of one became the ally of the other.

And so one of the most unusual partnerships of the Golden Age was born.

⚔️ The Attack

Imagine standing atop a Spanish fort overlooking the Caribbean.

Out on the horizon:

🏴‍☠️ Pirate ships appear.

Cannons ready.

Black flags snapping in the wind.

The garrison prepares for an attack from the sea.

Then...

A second threat emerges.

🏹 Indigenous war canoes slip from rivers and mangrove channels.

Warriors advance through the jungle.

Suddenly the Spanish find themselves trapped.

Attacked from land and sea.

🌊 Two Fronts. One Battle.

The pirates brought:

  • Cannons

  • Muskets

  • Ships

The Kuna brought:

  • Knowledge of the land

  • Hidden routes through jungle and rivers

  • Skilled warriors determined to drive out Spanish influence

Together they became a nightmare for colonial authorities.

Several Spanish settlements throughout the region found themselves facing coordinated attacks that felt impossible to stop.

⚓ Why It Worked

The alliance wasn't built on friendship.

It was built on a simple truth:

The Spanish were enemies of both.

For a brief moment in history, pirates and indigenous warriors found common cause.

And the Caribbean became far more dangerous for anyone flying the Spanish flag.

🏴‍☠️ Pirate Republic Take

This may be one of the most cinematic true stories of the Golden Age.

Pirate ships offshore.

War canoes emerging from jungle rivers.

Spanish forts under attack from every direction.

If it appeared in a movie, people would say it was too dramatic.

But it happened.

🎉🏴‍☠️ PIRATE EVENT OF THE WEEK

⚓ The Long Beach Pirate Picnic

Not every pirate gathering needs cannon fire.

Sometimes...

You just need a shady tree, good company, and a crew that speaks your language.

This weekend, pirates from across Southern California are gathering at:

📍 El Dorado Park East📍 Long Beach, California

For the first-ever Pirate Picnic.

🏴‍☠️ Leave the Ship. Bring the Crew.

This isn't a festival.

It's a gathering.

A chance to:

⚓ Dress in your pirate finery⚓ Meet fellow buccaneers⚓ Share stories and sea tales⚓ Enjoy a relaxed afternoon beneath the trees

Mini encampments are encouraged, making it feel like a small pirate village tucked away from the modern world.

🍗 What's on the Menu?

Bring your own provisions:

🥖 Picnic baskets🔥 Propane grills🍖 Fresh-cooked meals

Whether you're feasting like a pirate captain or enjoying hardtack and fruit like a deckhand, the idea is simple:

Gather. Relax. Enjoy the company.

⚔️ By Order of the Kingdom...

Every port has rules.

This one has a few:

❌ No weapons (real or prop)❌ No alcohol❌ No smoking

This is a family-friendly gathering focused on fellowship, costumes, and community.

⚓ Pirate Republic Take

Honestly?

Some of the best pirate memories aren't made at giant festivals.

They're made sitting beneath a tree, swapping stories with strangers who instantly feel like old shipmates.

No battles.

No schedule.

Just pirates being pirates.

⚓ Ed Hardy R/C Pirate Ship (2008)

Every now and then, a piece of pirate treasure appears that makes you stop and say:

"Wait... they made WHAT?"

This week's Pirate Booty is exactly that.

A 2008 Ed Hardy Remote-Control Pirate Ship, designed during the peak of the Ed Hardy craze by fashion designer Christian Audigier.

And somehow...

It exists.

🏴‍☠️ A Pirate Ship You Can Actually Command

Unlike most pirate collectibles that sit on a shelf, this one was built to sail.

Features included:

⚓ Remote-control operation🏴‍☠️ Detailed pirate ship styling🌊 Designed for ponds, lakes, and calm waters💀 Full pirate aesthetic inspired by Ed Hardy's signature artwork

It's equal parts pirate ship, toy, and early-2000s pop-culture artifact.

⚔️ Why It's Interesting

The ship comes from a strange moment in history when:

  • Pirate culture was booming thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean

  • Ed Hardy was everywhere

  • RC boats were still a major hobby market

Somehow those three currents collided...

And produced a remote-control pirate ship.

Most pirate collectibles fall into one of two categories:

  • Historical reproductions

  • Fantasy merchandise

This one occupies a third category:

"Things nobody expected to become pirate collectibles."

And that's exactly what makes it memorable.

☠️ Captain’s Log

The sea keeps many secrets.

Some pirates vanish without a trace.

Some become legends.

And some leave behind stories so remarkable that centuries later we're still telling them around campfires, tavern tables, and pirate gatherings beneath shady trees.

So keep your powder dry.

Keep your compass true.

And if ye spy treasure on the horizon...

Try not to spend it all in one port.

🎵

May your sails stay full,And your rum stay stout,May fortune find its way aboard,Before the tide runs out.

🎵

Until next tide, me hearties—

Captain Blackquill ⚓🏴‍☠️

"For the sea keeps no legends... only those bold enough to become them."
